Rule

In an expert system, a rule is a specification of a decision heuristic as an IF-THEN or IF-THEN-ELSE statement. For example, a rule in a financial planning system could be "IF your stock's earnings per share is over 30, and it has gone up over 50% in the past year, and it is over 20% of your portfolio, THEN you should sell until it is 15% of your shares."

from Turban, E., and J. Aronson. (1988) Decision Support Systems and Intelligent Systems. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, Inc.
